Preventing Algae with Pool Algaecide

Algae are microscopic plant life that, in the right conditions, multiply rapidly usually turning pool water green and opaque.  Because algae are so small they do not become visible to the human eye until there are millions of them, so the early stages of an algae attack can easily go undetected and therefore untreated.  Recovering an algae infested pool can be time consuming and expensive, which is why algae prevention is always preferable to cure.

The secret to keeping your pool algae free is to maintain the correct water balance, oxidise regularly to destroy sources of algae food and organic wastes, apply algaecide to support the sanitiser (chlorine or bromine), continuously keep a consistent sanitiser level in the water and test regularly to ensure that the correct levels are being maintained.

Our pool and spa algaecides have been specially formulated to support your efforts of keeping algae out of the pool.  There is a choice of regularly dosed and longlife algaecides, in our opinion the use of both is the most effective way to prevent algae growth.

Should I spend extra money on Algaecide?

Pool algaecides are a highly recommended addition to any swimming pool, hot tub or spa chemical arsenal, and greatly aid sanitization agents such as Chlorine.  However, in some cases chlorine (along with correct pH control) might be sufficient.  Hot weather and especially tropical regions generally consider algaecides must have pool chemicals, as algaecide will increase the power of your chlorine and act as a safety net if regular maintenance is interrupted or neglected temporarily.  The hotter the weather, the faster Chlorine evaporates.

Algae can be an addition danger and safety concern due to it’s slimey nature and when it forms on you swimming pool steps and sides.  Because algae spores are forever being brought to your pool in the air from precipitation, it is generally considered better to pro-actively defend pools and spas rather than re-actively administer an algaecide treatment after it has already occurred.  A large amount of algae can be present a long time before you can see it and know it’s there.  All it takes is a few days of direct sunlight and a slight lapse in santization dosing, and you suddenly have a green pool.

There are some excellent pool algaecides available and most are equally effective in spas with smaller doses.  It’s hard to imagine that a litre of any liquid could fight the algae effectively for up to 12 months! But a litre of a good copper based algaecide can keep a 10,000 litre pool algae free for this long, and should not break the bank. When you see the different in the frequency of pool water problems, you will know that it was a good decision to spend a little extra of swimming pool algaecide.
