Winterising Chemicals

Show:

Before you close your pool for winter, it is best to do some basic maintenance and add a few winteriser chemicals to prevent a swamp from forming, and reducing your effort involved in getting the pool sorted once again the following season.

The basic winterising pool chemicals you should consider using:

Shock Treatments (see here)
Long Life Algaecides (see below)
Flocculants (see here)

Shock treating your water before closure will kill off any bacteria present, and with a higer dose than usual (as there will not be bathing!) should get your winterising off to a good start.

Algaecides are a preventative measure and should stop algae growing again.  It is recommended that you check again 3-4 month into winter, after your initial dosing, and to re-shock / top up on algaecide if necessary. Also, whenever algae breaks occur, consider using a flocculant to beef up your filtration, as dead algae quite often passes directly through the filter causing cloudy water.
