Why do I need pool chemicals?
Explanation of our full range of pool and spa chemicals.
| The reason you need to use pool chemicals is to kill pathogenic bacteria and algae which can turn the pool green and make it unsightly. Filtering the water removes the dead bodies of bacteria and algae and prevents the pool water from turning cloudy. Filtration on it’s own is not enough as it doesn’t kill the bacteria and algae. Chlorine is the most commonly used chemical for this purpose as it is relatively cheap. Bromine can be used as an alternative but can work out more expensive. |
| Chlorine can be supplied as a liquid (Sodium Hypochlorite), as granules or in tablet form. Stabilized chlorine Pro-Chlor Granules (chlorine with cyanuric acid added) is less effected by sunlight so will last longer. Chlorine shock (unstabilized chlorine ProSwim Shock-it) quickly kills bacteria and algae and gets used up fast. Best done overnight. |
All chlorine treated pools should have a pH between 7.2 and 7.6. A low pH (acidic) is corrosive and will damage pool parts and sting your eyes. A high pH (alkaline) inhibits the chlorine from doing it’s job and also can cause scale formation, due to higher calcium content.
| Shock granules | (Calcium hypochlorite, unstabilized chlorine granules) |
| ProSwim Shock-it | |
This has a long shelf life but as some of the calcium does not fully dissolve it can cause some cloudiness. Best mixed with water and added through the skimmer.
| Non-chlorine shock granules | (Potassium Peroximonopersulphate) |
| ProSwim Oxyshock | |
No need to wait with this powerful chlorine-free shock, you can swim straight after the dosing. Great at killing organic pollutants, bacteria, and algae. It also boosts the chlorine’s killing power. Regular use also clarifies and restores sparkle to pool water. This quick dissolving formula requires no pre-mixing and will not bleach your vinyl liner. It is also compatible with bromine. Use 0.5kg per 10,000 gallons
| Stabilised chlorine granules | (Sodium Dichloroisocyanurate Dihydrate) |
| Pro-Chlor Granules | |
Long lasting and has a long shelf life. This should be added regularly to maintain a concentration of 1-2 ppm. More will be needed during hot weather when your water is warmer or when the pool is uncovered for longer periods. Always pre-disolve to avoid granules bleaching your liner.
| Stabilised Chlorine tablets | (Sodium Trichloroisocyanurate) |
| ProSwim Maxi-tabs or Mini-Tabs | |
Long lasting with a long shelf life. These must be used either in the skimmer or preferably with a dispensor so they slowly dissolve. Never mix pool chemicals together in their undissolved or concentrated form. Stabilised and unstabilised chlorine, for example, form an explosive mixture.
ADJUSTING pH (Pool water must have a pH between 7.2 and 7.6)
To lower pH - ProSwim Dry Acid (Sodium Bisulpate) Add 10grm per 2000 gals to reduce pH by approximately 0.2.
To raise pH – ProSwim Alkali (Sodium Carbonate) Add 10grm per 2000 gals to raise pH by approximately 0.2.
OTHER CHEMICALS USED AS POOL SANITISERS
Bromine Tablets
Spa Bromine tablets provide a residue free source of active Bromine for disinfection of spas. It must be used in a dispenser and adjusted to achieve a bromine residual of 2.0-4.0 ppm. More expensive than chlorine and attacked by light so is not often used in outdoor pools unless bathers are particularly allergic to chlorine. The pH must be kept between 7.2 and 7.6
Algicide ProSwim All Seasons Concentated Long Life Algicide
A copper based algicide for summer or winter. Inhibits the growth of algae if the chlorine level accidently falls.
1lt will treat 10,000 gals in summer and 7,500 gals in winter.
Summer - Add the required dose and retreat 10-12 weeks later to cover the complete season.
Winter – Add the required dose and allow to circulate prior to shutting down the system.
ProSwim Spa Defender (Scale and stain inhibitor)
Prevents and removes scale formation. 60mls for spas up to 800 gals. 120mls spas over 800 gals.
Add dose directly to spa. Run pump for 1 hour on a normal filter cycle.
Do not use on the same day as ‘Spa Bright & Clear’.
ProSwim Spa ‘Bright & Clear’ (Liquid Clarifier)
Polymer based liquids that cause fine particles to stick together so that they can removed by the filter.
Use 30mls per 450 gals. Dilute recommended dose in a plastic bucket then add to the spa.
ProSwim Spa Foam Down (Suppresses & removes foam)
Add sparingly directly to the foaming area. Repeat as required.
Ozone purification explained
Ozone is generated when a molecule of oxygen is illuminated by UV light. It destroys algae bacteria and viruses on contact, breaks down harmful chemicals and acts as a flocculent. It also oxidizes combined chlorine and bromine freeing them to be re-used. As micro-organisms are killed only as they pass through the unit a residual of chlorine or bromine must be kept in the pool.
To calculate your pool capacity
To calculate your pool capacity
Measure in feet. L x W x Average Depth x 6.25 = Gallons - Round pools = L x W x Average Depth x 4.9 = Gallons.
