How to maintain pools in extremely hard water areas
If you live in a hard water area, you may be one of these unfortunate pool owners who have to battle with ghastly limescale build-up in pipes, plumbling and on pool wall surfaces and tiling. In extreme cases the usual methods of applying Total Alkalinity Reducer and PH Minus products are not enough to control the problem, and a specialty scale remover chemical must be used.
It is technically correct to say that there are no chemicals that remove calcium hardness directly, but “sequesterants” are designed to keep calcium and other salts in solution so that they can be more easily removed by the filter. A typical procedure for the use of stain and scale inhibitor, for example, would be to add the dose to water and within a week scale should begin to soften into the water, "beef up" the filter bed with Jelly clear cubes, Jolly Gell or Aqua Sparkle Tablets and backwash. The theory is you will be trapping and backwashing calcium hardness. One down side of most sequesterants is that they contain phosphates that are a nutrient for algae. You may want to check out our phosphate free scale inhibitor if algae is an issue i.e. pool surrounded by trees.
