Balancing Pool Water Guide
Why Balancing Pool Water?
We can help to balance your pool water throughout each season such as at the beginning of the swimming season, periodically throughout summer, and closing down for winter (see winterising swimming pools guide). But learning to balance your pool water will provide several benefits to your swimming pool experience.
High quality bathing conditions, ideal for contact with skin.
Optimising the use of pool chemicals. Balanced pool water increased the effectiveness of pool chlorine.
Reduced chance of other pool problems such as algae formation and scale formation. Algae can cause unsightly green water and slimy pool walls, and scale formation can cause damage to pumps, filters and other pool house equipment.
Increased clarity for crystal clear water everytime!
Symptoms and effects of poorly balanced pool water
This is only a guide. Always refer to the dosing instructions on the packet of any pool chemical!
| LEVELS TO BALANCE |
High | Ideal | Low |
| pH | Chlorine released too slowly. Scale formation more likely. Eye/Skin irritation. | 7.2 - 7.6 | Chlorine released too quickly. Plant at risk due to acid attack. eye/skin discomfort. |
| Total Alkalinity | pH movement more stubborn. Cloudy water more likely. |
80-150mg/l (ppm) |
pH 'bounces' around. more aggressive water/plant damage. Corrosion effect more likely. |
| Calcium Hardness | Scale Forming | Min 200mg/l (ppm) | Aggressive corrosive water. |
| Cyanuric Acid |
Chlorine effectiveness impact impaired. |
30-60mg/l (ppm) | Sunlight will destroy chlorine. |
| Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) | Chlorine less effective, can promote scale formation. | Max 1500mg/l (ppm) | No problems. |
Pool Water Balancing Summary
When we refer to balancing pool water, we are talking about testing and dosing pool chemicals to bring levels to optimum levels. The levels you are mostly concerned with are pH levels (adjust with pH plus and pH minus chemicals), and your sanitisation levels (either Pool chlorine or pool bromine). Other levels will only concern you if you have a problem balancing pool water, and we recommend seeking further advice in this instance.
